When Procrastination Is No Longer Fun and Games
We all have aches and pain, soreness that comes and goes, even the occasional numbness. Yet, if we are honest with ourselves, are we ever truly pain free? We are told that pain and disability are natural parts of aging—the older we grow, the worse our health gets.
Good news: That’s not entirely true and here’s why.
During adolescence, our bodies have a high degree of muscle mass. Muscle is what is used to burn off the food we eat. The more muscle we have, the greater our ability to keep body fat down. As we become less active, usually as a result from sedentary work activity, our muscles begin to atrophy. In turn, our ability to metabolize foods diminishes, and our body fat starts to increase. At the same time, our joints start falling out of alignment because our muscles are no longer strong enough to hold them. In addition, the fatter we become, the more our joints inflame, which leads to arthritis.
To add insult to injury, the more we hurt, the more we crave sugars (carbohydrates and processed sugar). Our bodies will gradually be unable to compensate with the increase in body fat, leading to high cholesterol, arthritis, diabetes, and even cancer. Eventually, we require something stronger to deal with our discomfort. More and more, this is seen in prescription opioids, which lead to 78 deaths a day.1 To put in different terms, 78 people die every day because they are trying to manage their pain in a non-productive way.
Breaking the cycle is very difficult, sometimes even excruciating, depending on the degree of opioid or sugar addiction that’s present. The most important thing to realize is that there’s hope. As long as you live and breathe, there will be hope. Chiropractic is phenomenal at getting joints back into alignment and managing pain without pharmacology. When pain is reduced, it suddenly becomes easier to move, build muscle again, and wean off of the opioids and other addictions.
The underlying problem, of course, is procrastination. For our health, we tend to focus on today only. Tomorrow can be terrifying for people, especially when seeing invalid seniors all around us. But it doesn’t have to be the endgame. A healthy life is possible if you have the will. MG Chiropractic can get you there.
